SOTO MADURA


Soto is a special food of Madura. These are chicken or beef, egg, bean sprouts, and potato. The ingridients are garlic, ginger, turmeric, galangale, kemiri, citrus fruit and salt. This soto is dished up with sowing leaf onion, celery, fried onion. Every territory in madura has special soto for dishes. Soto madura is very delicious to eat and try the taste.

SATAY MADURA


Satay Madura has a distinctive flavor. Sate Madura usually made of chicken. Sate Madura can be found almost in all regions, especially in big cities like Medan, Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. But besides chickens, there are also uses goats as the main ingredient of satay. The marinade is a mixture of finely ground peanut paste and a little onion.

Population of Madura is about 3.65 million, the most dominant from ethnically Madurese. The language of Madura is Madurese. The Madurese are a large ethnic population in Indonesia. They come from the island of Madura as well as surrounding islands. Madurese who live in the eastern of East Java, commonly called as "Horseshoe". There are from Pasuruan to the north of Banyuwangi. Madurese are found in Situbondo and Bondowoso, and east of Probolinggo, Jember, and a few at most who speak Javanese, including North Surabaya, as well as some of Malang.

GILI GENTING

To visit Gili Genting, you will across the sea about 45 minutes from the Port Saronggi. The cost of using the motorcycle start from Rp. 10.000, - for one person. On the boat, we can enjoy the beauty of the ocean surrounding the islands which exist in Sumenep. Motor boat in Gili Genting always there every day from morning until late afternoon.

GILI LABAK

Formerly, Gili Labak called by people with 'Pulau Tikus'. Gili Labak has an area about 5 hectares and can be surrounded by walking about 30 minutes. At there, electricity is only lit at night, there is no inn or food stalls. Fresh water in Gili Labak sold for Rp. 10,000. GILI RAJA

Gili Raja located in the strait of Madura (south Sumenep). The island has an area of about 11.39 km2. This island's distance near to Gili Genting island, just about 9.24 km. This island also consists of 4 villages, namely Lombang village, Jate village, Banbaru village, and Banmaleng village. The northern part of this island is dominated by rock. In Gili Raja, the roads are like dirt. So in this island there only motorcycle and bicycle for transportation.

This beach is located on the east Sumenep in the district of Batang-Batang. Lombang beach is approximately 25 km from Sumenep. This beach has available rooms for visitors to wash up after playing the sand or swim. If you want to sit relaxed, tourists can sit on few places to sit or small stalls on the beach which sell `ice degan` (from coconut) and `lontong` salad (salad Madura). In afternoon, 'lontong' salad and ice degan are very suitable to be enjoyed.

KANGEAN ISLANDS

Sometimes, Kangean Islands are considered to be a part of Bali and Lombok. However, these islands are still included Sumenep Madura, East Java. These islands has an area of 487 km and have 60 island. The biggest island in Kangean Islands is Kangean Island. They have a same name. Some islands in Kangean are Bungin Island, Sepangkur, Saur, Saebus, Salarangan, Gusung, and others. Kangean's people call themselves Kangean. They origin language is Malay, different with the language of Madura and Bali.

SAPUDI ISLAND

Sapudi Island included in Madura Island. Geographically, this island located in east of Madura. Sapudi island including Sumenep regency. This island only has two districts, namely Gayam, and Nonggunong. Sapudi's people mostly work as farmers, fishermen and breeders. Sapudi Island is a first place that started a famous culture in Madura. We know it as "Karapan Sapi Madura".

If you want to go to Giliyang Island, you can go there by ship for one time, (I mean just for go or go back). The price is only Rp 8.000,00 for one person from Dungkek harbor. Thats need 45 minutes. But, you can also rent ship for your round trip (your full travel) and the price is Rp 175.000,00. All visitors who have been arrived in Giliyang Island can use the services of a motorcycle to travel around the island. The charge around Rp 30,000 for one person. 30 minutes is enough for around the island.

If you want to go to Giliyang Island, you can go to Dungkek Harbor by MPU (Mobil Penumpang Umum). The price is Rp. 15.000,00 for one person. But if you want to use your own car or other transportation, you can board out your own to people in Dungkek. Trust, your own transportation will be safety. Than, from Dungkek you need Rp. 10.000,00 for yourself to go to Giliyang by regular ship. The ship will start at 10 am so you must go there before that time. You can also use a ship services for your full trip to Giliyang and need Rp. 400.000,00 for that with the maximum capacity of the ship is for 30 people.

Gili Iyang gorgeous sandy beaches adorned with rocks. Version 1 :

Giliyang Island has started hundreds of years ago. Giliyang has been known during Hindu - Buddhist kingdoms, before Islam grow in Sumanep. Start from the traders across the Madura Strait. The traders who consist of Indians, Chinese, and Arabic, Bugis, Makassar and Mandar from Southern Sulawesi. Sumanep has become an important harbor for many boats and ships outside the country. Sumanep is a transit port for India, China, and other countries. In the 12th until the 14th century, Giliyang not became a settlements. But, in the 15th century, there known 3 person as Giliyang's forest loggers. There were Daeng Kareng Masalle, Jhu’ sanga’ , dan Jhu’ Tarona ( Andang Taruna). First house form of Giliyang is like 'Rumah Panggung'. 'Rumah Panggung' is a traditional house of south Sulawesi. The house was founded in Giliyang first by Karaeng Masalle, when his second trip to Giliyang. In, 18th until the early of 19th century, Giliyang entered a new existence in its history. People in Giliyang go through into a good progress. That was urging them to expand their territory. Giliyang people has become a systemic and orderly society. 

Version 2 : 

Previously, Giliyang Island has two names. There were 'Gila Iyang' and 'Gila Elang'. The name was 'Gila Iyang' because the ancestors of Giliyang had given the name liked that and it means 'Gila'. 'Gila' means to 'crazy'. Because before, this island was became a deportation place for 'gila' people (crazy people). And, this island name was 'Gila Elang' because in Madura language 'Gila Elang' or 'Pulo Elang' means to a lost island. At the time of the Netherland governor in Indonesia, this island cannot found and like a lost island.

Geographically, this island has 6⁰59' 9 LS - 114⁰10' 29 BT. Giliyang has 921.2 hectare large. Giliyang Island has 17 caves. Those caves located in Banra'as village and Bacanmara village. People on there called the caves as 'Gua Air'. Furthermore, Giliyang Island also have a big cliff. A cliff consist of black stone structure. Giliyang Island also has 3 beach. There are Roket Beach, Batu Kondang Beach, Batu Cangge Beach. When you visit to Giliyang Island, you will get many facilities. There are :

Most of the local people in Giliyang Island work as fishermen or traders. If the weather is bad, local people will farmed. Most of the farmer in Giliyang will plant some corns, crops, tomatoes, sugar apples, chillies, etc in their land. The yields will be used for sale in Sumanep. Usually, people of Giliyang using oil lamp and battery as lighting. Only a part of these people are using solar panels.
